What is a Clean Scent Standard?

Our Clean Scent Standard

1. Free From FDA‑Banned Antimicrobials

In 2016, the FDA banned 19 antimicrobial agents commonly used in consumer products. None of these appear in our fragrances—ever.

If it’s banned for safety, it has no place in your home.

2. Compliant With California Proposition 65

California’s Proposition 65 lists over 900 chemicals known to cause cancer, reproductive harm, or developmental issues.

Our Clean Scents exclude all Prop 65 chemicals above the Safe Harbor Limits established by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA).

  • If a Safe Harbor Limit is not defined, we hold ourselves to a self‑imposed threshold of less than 0.50%.

This ensures our fragrances remain well below levels associated with risk.

3. Free From OSHA‑Listed Harmful Chemicals

OSHA identifies more than 125 chemicals as potentially hazardous in workplace environments. We exclude all of them from our Clean Scent formulations.

If it’s unsafe for workers, it’s not welcome in our products.

What Our Clean Scents Do Not Contain

Our Clean Scent Standard ensures that none of our fragrances contain ingredients (above Safe Harbor limits) that fall into these categories:

Carcinogens

Substances known or suspected to cause cancer.

Mutagens

Compounds that can alter DNA.

Reproductive Toxins

Chemicals that may impair fertility or reproductive health.

Organ Toxins

Substances that can damage or disrupt organ function.

Acute Toxins

Compounds that may cause harm from a single exposure.

Endocrine Disruptors - (a big and personal one for me as I work on healing my thyroid)

Chemicals that interfere with hormonal and biological processes.

Your home should be a sanctuary—not a source of invisible stressors.

Why “Clean” Needs Clarity

The phrase “clean scent” is everywhere—yet no major fragrance or candle‑safety organization has ever defined what it actually means. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA), the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), and the National Candle Association (NCA) all provide safety guidelines, but none offer a formal definition of “clean fragrance.”

At BON Studios, we believe that if a term is going to shape what you bring into your home, it deserves a clear, honest meaning. Our definition is shaped not only by science, but by our ethical commitment to crafting fragrances and everyday products that honor both your wellbeing and your home environment.

Clean shouldn’t be a marketing mood. It should be a measurable standard you can trust.

Our Clean Scent Standard goes beyond existing regulations and is rooted in transparency, responsibility, and your right to make informed choices about the air you breathe.

Why This Matters

Fragrance safety is complex, and the industry often relies on vague language or partial transparency. We believe you deserve better.

A “clean scent” at BON Studios is not a trend or a buzzword—it’s a holistic commitment. One that honors your wellbeing, respects your home environment, and invites you into the process with full transparency.

Because when you spray the air or light a candle, you’re not just filling a room with fragrance.
You’re shaping the atmosphere of your life.
